Perth Highlights
Perth is the left-out Australian town. Generally disregarded by the rest of the country as a place of little interest and far too far away from anywhere of interest, Perth is overlooked by local and international visitors. However, this much underrated city has much to offer the enlightened and intrepid traveller, and with an open mind, the city can inspire as much as any of the other more famous metropolises.
Located on the west coast of Australia, Perth hugs gorgeous coastlines and boasts some of the most spectacular natural scenery on the continent. The city, the largest in the state, is home to some 1,700,000 people and is in The Economist’s top ten ‘Most Liveable Cities’. It lies upon the Swan River and has buildings, holidays and historical anecdotes dating from when the settlement was simply known as the Swan River Colony. A pleasure to explore and wander, the city also acts a base from which to explore the surrounding area. Beautiful sandy beaches are minutes away, parks are dotted throughout the city, and there is some very decent wine country nearby; there is something for everyone in Perth.
Must-do activities include cruising the Swan River. As the main body of water around which the original colony was built, this river forms an integral part of the city’s identity. Finding out about the Aboriginal beliefs concerning the river is also well worth the effort; this can be done by visiting the excellent museums Perth has available. For the art lover, there are some unique and fascinating art galleries and exhibitions on offer, such as the Art Gallery of Western Australia. And of course there’s Perth Zoo, a prospect no one could ignore! Make friends with kangaroos, pet a koala and see some of Australia’s most treasured and unusual animals in their natural habitats.
As well as cultural sights, the beaches and surrounding countryside await those visitors who prefer nature to the city. Hike around the Darling Range, or choose one of Perth’s many beaches and learn to surf. Swimming, sunbathing, rock climbing and body boarding are all favourite watery activities, and beach cricket is also not to be missed. Another typical Australian tradition, one well-honoured in Perth as well as other Australian cities, is the beach barbeque: the barbeques themselves are provided, all that’s required is the meat and some kitchen roll. If urban greenery calls, definitely pay a visit to Kings Park. Right in the city centre, this park boasts natural bushland, over 2000 Western Australian plants, and a walkway that winds amongst the treetops. Definitely appropriate for a stroll, a picnic, or an intensive botany lesson, this park delights with its beauty and scenery.
If getting outside the city is ideal, Rottnest Island is a short boat ride away. Stuffed with beaches and solitary jaunts, this island is the perfect hideaway for a day or two. Otherwise, be immersed in vibrant Freemantle, famous for its markets and festival atmosphere. There is plenty to see and do in and around Perth – go out and discover!
